The Collection: The Wilderness Years

This is a highly speculative page detailing potential material for a BD release covering 1990-2004. For the most part TME has resisted the temptation to turn this into an all-encompassing wishlist of bonus feature ideas; the list is mostly restricted to items that have been previously officially released by BBC Studios and its predecessors. There are a small number of exceptions.

The TV Movie

Released in the UK on VHS 14/5/96, on DVD 13/8/01, on SE DVD 4/10/10 and on BD 9/16. The SE and BD were both two disc releases, and in both cases the second disc was the same SD DVD. It also appeared on the 6/13 Regeneration set.

Also released in the US and Australia (but not the UK) on the 2013 DVD The Doctors Revisited 5-8.

Proposed moving Coming Soon: The Seeds of Doom (from SE) to Season 13.

More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS

Released in the UK on VHS 7/11/94 and on DVD 7/1/13

  • The original broacast version of this has never been commercially released and could be a viable bonus feature.
  • All main bonus features from the DVD sit better elsewhere: Remembering Nicholas Courtney has already been moved to Season 26, Stories: Peter Purves should move to a potential disc of The Savages and both The Lambert Tapes: Part One and an Easter Egg of Richard Martin reminiscing about Lambert would better fit with An Unearthly Child or Mission to the Unknown. Those Deadly Divas has already moved to The Mark of the Rani.
  • A 6:06s photo gallery was on the original DVD.
  • PDF materials already released comprise Radio Times listings.
  • A 2:14s trailer for the DVD of this and Shada appeared on The Claws of Axos: SE which could be included here.
  • A Coming Soon trailer for The Reign of Terror is likely to be moved to Season 1.

Scream of the Shalka

Released in the UK on DVD 16/9/13.

  • The DVD contained several bonus features which could be carried across:
Commentary with Paul Cornell, Wilson Milam, James Goss and Toby Hadoke
    Information Text by Paul Scoones
    Carry on Screaming (26:52)
    The Screaming Session (7:19)
    Interweb of Fear (23:47)
    Photo Gallery (2:04)
    Soundtrack Album (26:58)
  • A 1:19s trailer for the DVD appeared on The Ice Warriors which could be included here.
  • A Coming Soon trailer for Terror of the Zygons should have been moved to Season 12 but was not.

Note that Shalka was created using vector graphics, which enables true-HD output to be made without any upscaling or additional work, as this small sample shows, converted to true 1080p from the SWF files available on the official site at the time:

The Curse of Fatal Death

Released in the UK on VHS 1/9/99.

The original VHS included three sketches (one of which has already been moved to an era-appropriate set, suggesting the other two will be too) and a short Making of.

Other bonuses that appear to be being saved for this set (as they have already been removed from other releases)

  • The TARDISCam features on the original and SE releases of The Ark in Space, The Aztecs, Carnival of Monsters, Resurrection of the Daleks, The Seeds of Death and The Talons of Weng-Chiang.
  • 40th Anniversary Music video from The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Three Doctors and Earthshock.
  • The 1993 Planet of the Daleks mini-docs (only 2 of the 6 were released on DVD: Horror of Fang Rock and Spearhead from Space/SE)
  • The Doctor Forever! documentaries from the SEs of The Aztecs, The Green Death, Inferno, The Visitation and The Ark in Space
  • Search Out Science from Survival
  • Destiny of the Doctors from Survival
  • The Television Centre of the Universe Parts One and Two
  • The Shada webcast starring Paul McGann (released on the Shada DVD and the steelbook version of the BD, but not on the Season 17 set)

…and perhaps the Coming Soon trailers for multi-story DVD sets, which have been consistently absent from BD so far.

Other bonuses that could be saved for this set:

  • David Burton on his 1990s brush with Doctor Who (an easter egg from the Inferno: SE)

Entirely speculative items which have never been commercial released by the BBC but are owned by them:

  • Dimensions in Time (and Tomorrow’s World feature)
  • Resistance is Useless
  • Death Comes to Time
  • Real Time
  • The Story of Doctor Who
  • Doctor Who Night

When last approached, Children in Need were unwilling to allow Dimensions in Time to be included without a hefty fee that placed it outside a release’s budget – it seems therefore unlikely this will make it to The Collection.
