On 17th February 1989, the movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure received its global premiere. Its time-travelling phone booth (which tightly squeezed in a large number of historical figures, leading to jokes about the cramped space) was suggested by director Stephen Herek to writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon as an alternative to the originally written time-travelling van, which was considered to be too similar to the Back to the Future movies. Matheson and Solomon are on record that they knew nothing of Doctor Who or the TARDIS, but Herek has never commented.

The Bill & Ted visual canon is as follows:

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (movie, 17/2/89)
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures (Hanna-Barbera animated series, 13 episodes 15/9 – 22/12/90)
Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (movie, 19/7/91)
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures (DIC animated series, 8 episodes 14/9 – 16/11/91)*
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures (live action series, 7 episodes plus one unaired pilot 28/6 – 9/8/92)*
Bill & Ted Face the Music (movie, 28/8/20)

* Starring Evan Richards and Christopher Kennedy as Bill & Ted. The live action series was produced prior to Bogus Journey but held back to air after.

Trev and Simon were the regular comics on Saturday morning variety show Going Live! from 1987-1993; one of their regular features was as a folk duo who interviewed the star guests of the week, usually getting them mixed up with someone else. During these skits, Simon generally alternated between two outfits, one of which seems to be a reuse of a costume that appeared in Remembrance of the Daleks (as worn by John, who the Doctor discusses sugar with). Some of these sketches appeared on a 1990 compilation ‘Trev & Simon’s Stupid Video’ and a 1991 compilation ‘Trev & Simon’s Other Video’.

Oz no Mahou Tsukai was an anime adaptation of Frank Baum’s Oz books. It incorporates the slit-scan effect from the 1974-1980 Doctor Who titles (unofficially known as the ‘time tunnel’). This footage had been part of a collection of visual and sound effects that the BBC had sold to overseas production companies.

The time tunnel footage was used in scenes where Dorothy traveled to or from the Land of Oz. For more detail about international versions of this show, see our Colin Baker-era page.

The English dub was heavily abridged into a 4 x 90 minute omnibus format. This was sold as four ‘movies’:

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (including time tunnel scenes from Episodes 1 & 17)
  • The Marvelous Land of Oz
  • Ozma of Oz (including time tunnel scene from Episode 31)
  • The Emerald City of Oz

The time tunnel scenes from Episode 44 were not included in the omnibus format. The omnibus format was not sold in any languages other than English.
