All stories are taken from D3 copies of the original 2″ transmission masters, with credits rebuilt in true HD, colour-graded to match the original episodes. Some film inserts from City of Death showing the Jagaroth ship are included in HD.

Shada was released in numerous formats:

  • 1992: On VHS with linking narration by Tom Baker.
  • 2013: The VHS version, rebuilt in higher quality, and paired with More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS as part of The Legacy Collection. The rebuild featured a slightly incorrect sequence in Part Three, detailed here.
  • 2017: An HD partly-animated movie, on DVD and BD, with the VHS version included as a bonus feature. The Part Three error was partly, but not completely, fixed, and this time the ‘VHS edition’ end credits were removed.

City of Death was reissued on VHS in 2001 with a revised cover. Destiny of the Daleks was included in a 2001 WH Smith exclusive Davros Collection VHS set. More images can be found here.

The Horns of Nimon‘s DVD release was part of the Myths and Legends box set. Destiny of the Daleks was the last of the Davros serials to be released on DVD, and came out alongside a Davros Collection set. All of the stories in Season 17, except Destiny and City, were released after a change in BBC logo, and as such featured reversable sleeves.

Summary

All episodes include their original mono soundtracks, along with two new optional 5.1s for Destiny of the Daleks. Both of these include a revised voice effect for Davros, but a second ‘enhanced’ one also includes additional music taken from Tristram Cary’s previous scores.

Optional CGI is also available for Destiny of the Daleks (by John Kelly, from the original DVD) and (and on Nightmare of Eden (new, by Chris Cassell and Justin T Lee). On the original Destiny DVD, Kelly had included some laser beam effects in an incorrect place – this was swiftly removed for overseas releases, and likewise are not present here.

Behind the sofa are:

  • Graeme Harper, June Hudson and Mat Irvine
  • Colin Baker and Matthew Waterhouse
  • Katy Manning and Nicola Bryant

Text commentaries have all been revised and updated from the originals by Martin Wiggins (Destiny of the Daleks, replacing Richard Molesworth’s originals), Martin Wiggins (City of Death), Nicholas Pegg (The Creature from the Pit and Nightmare of Eden) and Wiggins with Niall Boyce (The Horns of Nimon; Boyce wrote the originals solo). Wiggins, Pegg and Paul Scoones provided a brand new commentary for the six-part part-animated Shada. Previous releases had mostly not featured a text commentary, except for the 2013 iteration of the ‘VHS Shada‘, which had a commentary from Pegg that would naturally not synchronise with this longer edition.

Coming Soon [Season 18]HD1:50New, produced for YouTube to promote s18 Collection release

The Nationwide bonus sits much better on Season 18, so was presumably missed by accident and added here, as close as possible to its airdate.

  • The Big Finish Shada has been removed, perhaps for The Wilderness Years.
  • Coming Soon: The Reign of Terror (from the original DVD) expected to move to Season 1.
  • Being a Girl is generic about women in Doctor Who and is not presented here.
  • Production subtitles were present on the 2013 release of the VHS version, but were removed for both the 2017 and 2021 releases.
  • The 2017 studio footage feature was not included, presumably in error.

The 1992 Shada has been rebuilt several times over the years, creating slightly different versions of the sequence where the TARDIS team enter Skagra’s spacecraft in Part Three:

  1. After ‘What’s that carpet doing here?’ the 1992 cut across to the monitor on Skagra’s ship quicker than on the 2013 and 2017 version.
  2. After ‘Affirmative K9, affirmative!’ the 1992 and 2017 versions cut to the side angle of the ascent up to the ship and then the shot of the legs, followed by the shot of K9 ascending , while the 2013 version holds on Tom and co for the whole time.

…The 2021 version almost exactly matches the 2017 version, except that the legs are no longer cropped off at the top.

The DVD version of the 2017 release presented the studio scenes as de-interlaced in error, which effectively filmised them, and also presented it (as per the BD) with black bars forced onto the left and right to create a BD-compliant 16:9 video – meaning those watching on a 4:3 screen found black bars around all edges. DVDs of 4:3 material are usually encoded in true 4:3, leaving the TV to either add black bars or not, as needed.

PDF Material

Richard Bignell’s promo image on Twitter, summarising the PDF content

The original DVD releases contained Radio Times listings (except on City of Death), along with an RT article and poem (Destiny of the Daleks). City of Death contained the 1980 annual and The Horns of Nimon contained blueprints. The 2017 Shada release contained a large compilation of PDFs.
