The Collection: Season 19

This was the second season released, on 10th December 2018 in the UK. On 31st May 2021, Season 19 (along with Season 12) became the first to be reissued in standard packaging, with a shorter booklet.

Sources

All episodes are sourced from the original PAL VT two-inch tapes via D3, with film sequences dropped in (necessitating the rebuilding of some video effects), in true HD, and opening and closing credits rebuilt from the original film masters.

When originally mastering the DVDs, the Restoration Team noted that Four to Doomsday in particular suffered from a high level of videotape dropout, quad banding in the second part of Earthshock (likely present on the original broadcast) and an early shot in Concorde in Time-Flight had a deep scratch that needed extra work.

Castrovalva was released on VHS the same month as Logopolis, and likewise Kinda and Snakedance just two months apart. For more information, see our VHS Guide.

The New Beginnings DVD box set contained The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis and Castrovalva. Kinda was part of the Mara Tales set with Snakedance, and Time-Flight was paired with Arc of Infinity as Tegan Tales. The Visitation received a standalone reissue in 2013 with enhanced special features and restoration.

Kinda and The Visitation: SE both had reversible sleeves due to the change in BBC logo.

Earthshock was also released in numerous other forms:

  • 2006: The Cybermen Collection (UK, Amazon-exclusive packaging of three Cybermen stories)
  • 2007: Revised ‘O-Ring’ packaging in the UK
  • 2013: The Doctors Revisited 5-8 (US and Australia) in omnibus format
  • 2015: The Cybermen (US, later reissued in Australia) along with several new series stories and an exclusive documentary ‘Cybermen Origins’
  • 2015: An Introduction to The Fifth Doctor (UK, HMV exclusive) also including Castrovalva.

All of the restored episodes, devoid of extras, were issued as part of the Doctor Who DVD Files magazine (2009-14) across the following issues: 32: Earthshock (24th March 2010), 42: the original DVD version of The Visitation (11th August 2010), 47: Castrovalva (20th October 2010), 93: Kinda (25th July 2012), 105: Four to Doomsday (9th January 2013), 135: Time-Flight (5th March 2014), and 152: Black Orchid (29th October 2014, the last issue in the range).

Summary

All episodes contain their original mono soundtracks, with Kinda and Earthshock also containing new optional 5.1 mixes. Those two stories, along with Castrovalva, The Visitation and Earthshock, contain optional isolated scores as per their original DVD releases (the later German Blu-rays would expand these to include isolated scores for Four to Doomsday, Black Orchid and Time-Flight).

Castrovalva contains new optional CGI effects (by Neil Bushnell), as do Earthshock (by Mike Tucker, Nick Sainton-Clark and Dave Jervis) and the final episode of Kinda (by Chris Petts and Sally Clayton), both from their original DVD releases.

Information text is available on all episodes, mostly from Martin Wiggins (updating his own Castrovalva and Time-Flight, and replacing Richard Molesworth’s Four to Doomsday) but also Jim Smith (updating his own Kinda), Richard Molesworth (from The Visitation SE, updated from the original DVD release by Nicholas Pegg), David Brunt (Black Orchid, replacing the original by Karen Davies) and Paul Scoones (Earthshock, replacing Richard Molesworth’s DVD).

Behind the sofa are:

  • Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton, Janet Fielding and Matthew Waterhouse
  • Mark Strickson and Sophie Aldred

Audio navigation is provided by Peter Davison.

Disc Layout

With the exception of the audio commentaries, titles are as they appear on the menu screen (and in the same order), with explanatory information in square brackets.

The disc layout was previewed in Doctor Who Magazine 532 (released 15 November 2018, cover date Winter 2018/2019) with the features listed out of order, and with alternate titles.

PDF Material

Richard Bignell’s promo image on Twitter, summarising the PDF content

The original discs contained the following PDFs:

  • Castrovalva: Radio Times listings, a letter, articles, the 1982 Annual and the BBC Enterprises 1982 Sales Sheets.
  • Four to Doomsday, Kinda, The Visitation SE and Black Orchid: Radio Times Listings
  • Time-Flight: Radio Times Listings and 1983 Annual

The DWM preview mistakenly listed the Doctor Who Annual 1982.

Errata

Many errors occured in the production of this complex set, leading to greater quality control in future:

Castrovalva Part One

3:19: A shot of the sky (after Adric points to E-space) stays on-screen too long, and the start of the next shot of the ambulance moving away is shorter as a result.

4:08: Nyssa activates the TARDIS scanner, but the animation of the door rising is missing, cutting straight to it being already open. In the US edition, this also triggers the audio being out of sync for the next few minutes.

4:38: The effects of the Master’s TARDIS are missing some minor elements (the shot also isn’t blanked fully, extending beyond the 4:3 frame).

5:10: There are some shifting sections of the screen, particularly over Tegan’s legs, perhaps the result of attempts to fix film damage.

Castrovalva Part Four

21:07: The following captions are missing from the info text track (and when they return, the remaining captions all appear to be out of sync with the relevant shots).

If Adric looks a bit green, it’s not necessarily the colour balance on your screen.
The script says that he is “still a little pallid after his long ordeal”, and Matthew Waterhouse had other reasons for looking off-colour: he’d had a good time the night before.

The BBC1 continuities also suffer audio sync. These were corrected and included in the s18 set.

Kinda Part Two

0:47: There is a blanking error on the right hand side.

The Visitation Part Two

11:05: A shot of the Android flicking a switch is missing between the shot of the poacher and the close-up of the axe.

The Visitation Part Three

17:01: The scanner screen insert has been relaid (in common with similar shots throughout the episode) but left at 50% opacity, so the original footage is also visible blurred behind it.

The booklet refers to the PDF of The Making of a Television Series which could not be cleared and was removed from the set at the last moment.

Black Orchid Part Two

18:00: The visuals start too early – the studio sound is still audible from the previous scene at the start. This was an issue with the DVD too (the original VHS release shows this was not an editing error present on the transmission master).

In the Blue Peter clip, the song If They Could See Me Now can be heard, but has been badly drowned out by a piece of stock music, presumably due to clearance issues.

Time-Flight Part One

1:03: A shot of Captain Urquhart is on for too long, removing a shot of air traffic contol.

Time-Flight Part Four

12:40: Visible film perforations.

The US received a disc replacement programme purely for the audio issue in Castrovalva.
