The Collection: Season 13

This season has not been announced or released; the disc makeup is theoretical based on what we already know of the range.

Sources

For DVD, all stories were sourced from digital D3 copies of the 2″ quad videotapes, which were ran through the PAL Transform Decoder and then remastered. As noted by the Restoration Team when the DVDs were released, a piece of incidental music from near the end of The Brain of Morbius Part 1 was found to be missing from the masters, so this was restored from an off-air audio recording.

Opening and closing titles are likely to be recreated using the original HD film, colour-graded to match the original episodes.

The first VHS and Betamax releases of Terror of the Zygons, Pyramids of Mars and The Brain of Morbius were omnibus versions, with several scenes omitted from the latter two stories. The Brain of Morbius was also released on V2000 and laserdisc, and Terror of the Zygons premiered on Australian VHS in 1987. Each of these stories was later released in episodic format, with Terror of the Zygons available on laserdisc in 1997 before a restored VHS release in 1999. For more information see our VHS guide.

The restored episodes were issued as part of the Doctor Who DVD Files magazine (2009-14) across the following issues: 33 Pyramids of Mars (Apr 7th 2010), 40 The Brain of Morbius (Jul 14th 2010), 94 Planet of Evil (Aug 8th 2012), 120 The Seeds of Doom (Aug 7th 2013), 126 The Android Invasion (Oct 30th 2013), and 151 Terror of the Zygons (October 15th 2014).

Pyramids of Mars was included on the Blu-ray of The Sarah Jane Adventures Season 4 in 2011, and (as Tales from the TARDIS) on Doctor Who: Season 1 in 2024.

Summary

Terror of the Zygons features 5.1 audio options, both on the broadcast and extended versions.

Info text is expected to be revised for Blu-ray. It was originally by Martin Wiggins (Terror of the Zygons, Pyramids of Mars, The Seeds of Doom), Richard Molesworth (Planet of Evil, The Brain of Morbius) and Nicholas Pegg (The Android Invasion).

There are isolated scores for Geoffrey Burgon’s music on Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom.

Disc Layout

TME has resisted the temptation to turn this into an all-encompassing wishlist of bonus feature ideas; the list is restricted to items that have been previously officially released by BBC Studios and its predecessors.

Terror of the Zygons

  • Doctor Who Stories: Tom Baker and Doctor Who Stories: Elisabeth Sladen Part 2 have already been moved to Seasons 18 and 14 respectively
  • Coming Soon: The Moonbase expected to move to Season 4
  • The Fourth Doctor Time Capsule, which included the DVD of Terror of the Zygons as the main feature, included An Interview with the Time Lord (25m57s) which could be included here.
  • All of Tom Baker’s links to Disney Time would be a logical extra special feature for the Blu-ray
  • The Skarasen puppet has been restored and filmed recently, perhaps indicating that new special effects are being prepared for Blu-ray

  • Serial Thrillers has already been moved to Season 14
  • Coming Soon: The Android Invasion & Invasion of the Dinosaurs (The UNIT Files), from the Colony in Space DVD, seems unlikely to be included as per all other DVD trailers for multi-story releases
  • Howard Da Silva syndicated Time-Life introductions and closings narrations (1978) (from the original R1 release only) seem unlikely to be included as per Seasons 12 and 14
  • A widescreen, unrestored, omnibus version with introduction by Steven Moffat was released on the 2013 US/Australian DVD, The Doctors Revisited 1-4, though seems unlikely to be included as per Spearhead from Space (Season 7), Earthshock (Season 19), Vengeance on Varos (Season 22) and Remembrance of the Daleks (Season 25)
  • The 1976 omnibus, broadcast October 27th, seems a likely new bonus feature for Blu-ray
  • The 2024 omnibus, Tales from the TARDIS, could also be included. The sequel episodes from Season 1, The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death, could even make an appearance. However, since all three were included on the Season 1 Blu-ray, this could arguably duplicate over three hours of content unnecessarily.
