The Collection: Season 22

This was the eleventh season released, on 20th June 2022 in the UK. It was reissued on 17th June 2024 in standard packaging, with a shorter booklet.

The Eternal Mystery

Sources

All episodes originate from their PAL 1″ masters, with the credit sequences rebuilt using the raw SD masters, colour-graded to match the original episodes. A scratch throughought the second part of Timelash has proven particularly troublesome over the years, with fixes made manually and sometimes with U-matic dub from the John Nathan-Turner estate. Some film sequences from Revelation of the Daleks were available for re-use, but the film for The Two Doctors has remained elusive.

Attack of the Cybermen and Revelation of the Daleks were both first released on VHS as part of themed tins for the Christmas market, paired with The Tenth Planet and Planet of the Daleks respectively.

For more information on the VHS releases, see our guide.

Revelation of the Daleks was included in the January 2007 Amazon exclusive Dalek Collection DVD and the November 2007 Complete Davros Collection DVD, as well as being reissued individually in revised packaging in 2007.

The Two Doctors was reissued as part of the Bred for War DVD collection in May 2008.

Vengeance on Varos was released in the US and Australia (but not the UK) in omnibus format on the 2013 DVD The Doctors Revisited 5-8.

The restored stories were issued as part of the Doctor Who DVD Files magazine (2009-14) across the following issues: 82: Attack of the Cybermen (Feb 22nd 2012); 68: Vengeance on Varos (Aug 10th 2011); 63: The Mark of the Rani (1st June 2011); 45: The Two Doctors (Sep 22nd 2010); 141: Timelash (May 28th 2014); and 38: Revelation of the Daleks (Jun 16th 2010).

  • The US-only ‘Who’s Who’ feature from the original release is not present, as usual.
  • Two casting news features from the SE moved to The King’s Demons on Season 20.
  • Tomorrow’s Times: The Sixth Doctor and the French and Saunders sketch (both from the SE) moved to Season 23.
  • Coming Soon: The Ambassadors of Death (from the SE) expected to move to Season 7.
  • A Saturday Superstore feature from 17/3/84 with Baker and Bryant (2m3s on the Mark of the Rani DVD and 15m7s on the Vengeance on Varos SE) is absent here, perhaps to be saved for Season 21.
  • On the initial UK release, the production subtitles stopped ten minutes into episode two due to an error in authoring. This was corrected for the Region 4 (Australasia/South America) release, and fixed on the SE.
  • The 5.1 version of the isolated score was not mentioned in the DWM preview. Points of View was considered a new feature, though it was an easter egg on The Two Doctors DVD.

  • A 3:55 compilation of hiatus news reports (from the original DVD) replaced with a longer one on The Two Doctors disc.
  • The Extended Part One is listed on the Episode Selection screen, between Parts One and Two. The audio navigation menu describes it as “Special Episode 1”.

The original releases of Attack, the Varos: SE, Mark of the Rani and Timelash contained Radio Times listings and articles (one of which – about the increase in violence in the programme – was also on both Varos: SE and Rani). Attack of the Cybermen contained Radio Times listings for The Invasion and an article by Kit Pedler from Listener which will naturally be moved to Season 6. The Sales Document was present on the Varos: SE release and the 1985 annual on Mark of the Rani, which will presumably be moved to Season 21.

Errata

At the start of Revelation of the Daleks Part Two, the first shot holds for too long, and as a result the second shot appears for only half a second before the episode re-syncs. This is likely because of the crossfade needed from the opening credits resulting in the first shot being lifted from the end of Part One.
