The Complete First Series

A new beginning for a new Doctor would signify a new way of marketing the DVD range.

Apart from the obvious difference that from 'Rose' onwards no episodes would see an analogue release, 2Entertain took the unprecedented decision to release "vanilla" versions throughout 2005, beginning during the broadcast of the series itself, and then release a lavish box-set for Christmas with added bonus features.

Sony's new UMD format, exclusively compatible with its PSP handheld gaming system, would also get a look-in.

DVD Releases - Vanilla [UK only - released by 2Entertain]

16/05/2005: Volume 1 (Rose, The End of the World, The Unquiet Dead)
13/06/2005: Volume 2 (Aliens of London, World War Three, Dalek)
01/08/2005: Volume 3 (The Long Game, Father's Day, The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances)
05/09/2005: Volume 4 (Boom Town, Bad Wolf, The Parting of the Ways)

These episodes were all as-broadcast, right down to the sound mix (the series was mixed in 5.1, but downmixed for transmission to 2.0, as they appear here) - with the exception of a cue from Rose where the Doctor is introducing himself in the Powell estate. This appeared in the broadcast mix and the box set version, but was missing from the early leaked edit and this release.

Due to a misprint, Volume 3 was classified a 12, despite it correctly being a PG on the UMD release.

UMD Releases - [UK only - released by 2Entertain]

17/10/2005: Volume 2 (Aliens of London, World War Three, Dalek)
12/12/2005: Volume 1 (Rose, The End of the World, The Unquiet Dead)
26/12/2005: Volume 3 (The Long Game, Father's Day, The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances) - 2 disc set
26/12/2005: Volume 4 (Boom Town, Bad Wolf, The Parting of the Ways)

These episodes were all as-broadcast, right down to the sound mix (the series was mixed in 5.1, but downmixed for transmission to 2.0, as they appear here) - with the exception of a cue from Rose where the Doctor is introducing himself in the Powell estate. This appeared in the broadcast mix and the box set version, but was missing from the early leaked edit and this release.

Volume 2 was launched first - as the market for PSP was even younger than that of the vanilla DVDs, it was important to launch with a single title that would appeal to the non-completists - one with a Dalek on the cover was deemed the most appropriate.

Uniquely, the Canadian and US releases were staggered (despite identical content), as the series had yet to air in the States at the time the Canadian version was released. The French release was missing the extra disc 5, containing Confidential Cut Down (see below), and in 4:3 with burnt in subtitles. The Japanese release was also missing disc 5, but disc 4 featured The Christmas Invasion along with the other episodes, and all were dubbed into Japanese.

Exploded packshot of Canadian/US (and Aus rerelease) version...:

...and Japanese:

The episode breakdown was the same as that of the vanilla versions, but the sound was the original 5.1 and due to an authoring error a chapter in World War Three skips if "Play All" is selected. One shot of Rose in the "Next Time..." sequence of Boom Town was accidentally replaced, and an alternate take of some of Nick Brigg's Dalek dialogue in the episode of the same name also appeared (although the correct version would appear on the audio description track) - there were also a collection of extra bonus features, details below.

Fans complained strongly about the box-set packaging design, suggesting it was flimsy, often broken in transit when ordered online, and took up too much shelf-space. Eventually on October 16th 2006, the set was released in identical packaging to the June 2006 Australian reissue.

The set was trailed heavily in the UK and US (see videos right).
