Horror of Fang Rock

A mysterious light in the sky, an unnatural glow in the ocean and a thick fog bring terror to the lighthouse keepers of Fang Rock. When the Doctor and Leela arrive, the first death has already cast doubt on the safety of the lighthouse. But the Doctor discovers something more terrifying and evil than he could have imagined.

Terrance Dicks and his colleagues and fans look back over his career.

  • Louis Marks speaks of his love of Dicks' sense of humour that he injected into Day of the Daleks amongst others.
  • Letts and Dicks remind us that Doctor Who was a collaboration and then go on to cover the creation of The Master.
  • Dicks believes rewrites are "nonsense" -  Marks shares his thoughts on the matter.
  • Dicks and Letts discuss a "low budget" sequence in Ambassadors of Death that included a helicopter.
  • Dicks explains why he nearly always shied away from the producers job.
  • We look at the 1985 version of Oliver Twist and Dicks' contribution.
  • Peter Darvill-Evans introduces the Target novelisations, and tells us about Dicks' work on them. Brenda Gardner joins Dicks to explain why. Gardner also tells us about Dicks' writing career outside Who.
  • Darvill-Evans then introduces the New Adventures and tells us why he courted Dicks to write one of the earliest.
  • Paul Cornell gives us his thoughts on Dicks' writing style.
  • Christopher Barry covers Robot and The Brain of Morbius, which Dicks gives us his thoughts on, and working with Robert Holmes.
  • Dicks then explains how Horror of Fang Rock came about, as a quick replacement for the postponed State of Decay.
  • Cornell tells us why Horror of Fang Rock is such a classic and Dicks chats with him about why he decided to make the enemy into the Rutan.
  • Eric Saward moves us onto the subject of The Five Doctors and why he approached Dicks.
  • Cornell asks Dicks about the classic lines such as "Chap with wings, there, five rounds rapid." and regenerating the Doctor in Planet of the Spiders before going on to emphasise just what an impact he had - something which Marks, Saward and Letts agree with.
  • Letts asks Dicks how he'd like to be remembered. "Professional" is the answer.

Restoration Notes

The D3 copies of the original quads created in the mid-90s were used as the basis of this release: After being run through the transform PAL decoder, dropouts were cleaned up with Scratchbox and the credit sequences recreated. Mark Ayres, as usual, provided an audio restoration. A radio aerial that was cropped originally because of CSO effects was recreated via CGI.
