Doctor Who Tributes Discography

Just like the stuffy, vinyl-scented corners of an old charity shop, the following pages are positively overflowing with records you won't find mention of elsewhere. Doctor Who has inspired an astonishing array of tribute and spin-off records, on every format imaginable and from all around the world. There are oddities, there are gems, and there are hideously terrible songs, too - and they have all been carefully catalogued with release codes, track listings, picture sleeves, re-issue details and as much information about the composers and tracks as we can find. These pages are linked in (roughly) chronological order, cross-referenced, and sub-divided into the most obvious categories (Theme Tunes, Songs, Instrumentals etc) with a few hidden surprises along the way for the careful reader to discover.

This discography would not exist without the patience, help and enthusiasm given by friends and collectors around the world. We are extremely grateful to the artists, writers and producers who have given up their time to talk to us about their work, and to the dedicated record collectors who have allowed us to plunder their collections for scans, release codes and so much more. Thank you all.

Like our ambitious guide to Who on TV, this discography is likely to be missing a lot of records and songs simply because we haven't heard about them yet. If you have details of any records not listed here, please do get in touch - we'd love to hear from you!

Singles unrelated to Doctor Who that have nonetheless featured minor lyrical references to the programme include Microbe - Groovy Baby (1969), The Clash - Remote Control (1977) and The Beautiful South - How Long's a Tear Take to Dry? (1998), whilst Pseudonym's You Have the Right to Remain Silent (1988) incorporated samples from The Daleks' Master Plan and The Time Meddler. Pink Floyd's One of These Days (1971) included a short rendition of the Doctor Who theme tune during live performances. The promotional video for Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Get Over You (2002) was thought by some to pay homage to Spearhead from Space.

Tracks unrelated to Doctor Who that have nonetheless featured minor lyrical references to the programme include Massive Attack - Blue Lines (1991), Robbie Williams - Life Thru a Lens (1997) and Regurgitator - I Will Lick Your Ar*ehole (1998). Jarvis Cocker mentioned Doctor Who during a live show in Novemer 2001, captured on bootleg CD. Renegade Soundwave's Holgertron (1990) and Mansun's Being a Girl (1998) incorporated samples of the TARDIS sound effect on album tracks otherwise unrelated to Doctor Who.

Additional Releases

Singles and B-sides Album tracks Unreleased recordings of the Doctor Who theme are multiple, and would be impossible to chronicle in a discography such as this. Amateur audio and video productions featuring cover versions of the Doctor Who theme are freely available, and further original arrangements can be found for download on the internet. www.mp3.com hosted many of these themes and original Doctor Who tributes (and tribute artists - see below) until the site's closure in December 2003, with artists such as The Peace and Freedom Band recording tributes but neglecting to include them on their CDs. A variety of amateur tracks could also be downloaded via Napster, a file-share community program, before they stopped allowing users to host their own music. Some - like Martyr Complex's Dr Who (Xtermination Mix) - were original arrangements, while many others sampled the TV theme (usually the Delia Derbyshire arrangement), adding a dance beat or modulation effect. None were believed to be commercially available.

Related Artists

As well as writing songs for or about Doctor Who, many artists have chosen to call themselves after a character or race featured in the show. None of their songs or releases have anything to do with Doctor Who, and make no reference to it whatsoever - but some of their music is jolly good, and we've compiled some fairly comprehensive discographies and biographies.

Availability

The RPM compilation Who is Dr Who in October 2000 compiled the majority of 60s and early 70s singles, so buy yourself a copy of that and pat yourself on the back for a job well done: if this were pre-2000, you'd have spent a lot of time and money trying to collect that lot together. Unfortunately some of the greatest 80s and 90s tributes are destined to be forever lost to 21st Century listeners unless the powers that be allow Mark Ayres to release further volumes... so the work is down to you, my friends, to track down the elusive and shy records listed above. Recent covers of the theme shouldn't be too hard to find - a quick trip to your local Virgin Megastore will provide you with Mark Ayres' or The London Theatre Orchestra's themes - but if you want to stock up on the likes of Doctor in Distress 20 years after its release, the best advice we can give is to browse the web for a good stockist of second-hand records or sci-fi memorabilia. Whilst specialist high-street shops such as The Who Shop and Galaxy 4 (both in London - sorry, worldly readers!) used to be our first recommendation for long-lost tribute records, people these days are far more likely to empty their dusty vinyls onto eBay than to take them to a sci-fi store or a cash converters, and of course by looking online you'll have potential access to a thousand-times more records than a single shop could possibly hold. That said, to browse sucessfully online you really need to know what you're looking for; for the discovery of new, unexpected tribs, simply nothing can beat getting down on your hands and knees and leafing through old records in the back of charity shops. Go on!

So far as pricing is concerned, the fan-produced book Howe's Transcendental Toybox (Telos Publishing/ATB Publishing/British Fantasy Society, last revised 2003) features price recommendations for many tribute releases, and we recommend that you always check with this or another reliable source before parting with your money if an item seems unreasonably high-priced. It's worth noting that the internet has brought enormous change to the value of these records; whereas £65-£80 was considered a fair exchange for a copy of I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With a Dalek in 1997, the single (now available on CD, and easier than ever to fileshare on CD-R or in mp3 format around the world) has since appeared so often on eBay that its usual selling price has dropped to under £20 - despite it being 10 years older. The likes of eBay and the larger second-hand record websites (netsoundsmusic.com is one of our favourites) have sorted out the common-as-muck releases from the genuine once-in-a-blue-moon rarities, and our best advice in these online-shopping days is simply to browse around as much as possible before buying anything: you might well find the same thing considerably cheaper somewhere else. In short, don't believe anyone who tries to tell you that Mankind's disco theme is "rare"...
